98. Kalaya
Time itself, before which all appearances pass away.
The ninety-eighth name, Kalaya, brings the contemplation of Bhairava even closer to the heart of time. Earlier names described him as the lord of time and as the one who stands beyond it. Here the emphasis becomes even more direct: he is not merely the ruler of time as something separate from himself. He is kala itself, the power through which arising, duration, ending, and change become possible.
Elaboration
The form Kalaya points back to kala, time. In devotional usage the name salutes Bhairava as that very principle. It is a simple name, but it carries immense weight because time is the field in which every embodied being lives, hopes, fears, grows, and passes away.
Time as divine power
When this name is contemplated, time is no longer treated as a blind mechanical force. In Bhairava it becomes sacred power. The rhythms of birth and death, ripening and decay, memory and forgetting, all move within his presence. Nothing matures outside time, and nothing escapes its measure.
The remover of false permanence
Time also strips away illusion. Wealth, beauty, status, attachment, and even grief reveal their changing nature as the years unfold. In that sense Kalaya can be understood as the destroyer of delusion, not because he acts through cruelty, but because time exposes what cannot last. What is borrowed falls away. What is eternal remains.
A name for the spiritual seeker
For a devotee, this name is a call to sobriety and freedom. To bow to Kalaya is to remember that clinging to the passing world will always produce fear. Bhairava, as time itself, teaches discernment. He presses the seeker to look beyond temporary forms and to seek the reality that does not fade.
What this name teaches
This name presents Kalabhairava as the living principle of time rather than as a distant overseer of it. Meditating on Kalaya helps the mind accept impermanence without despair, because the passing of forms is not outside the divine. It is one of the ways the divine reveals truth.
Spiritual Insight
Contemplating Kalaya reminds the seeker that time itself is one of Bhairava's revelations, dissolving illusion and turning the heart toward what endures.
