Setting the Stage: Forty Years of Supernatural Events
Disciple:
Greetings, Gurudev.
Gurudev:
Greetings, son. Speak.
Disciple:
Gurudev, you have been sharing various supernatural incidents from your memories of this crematorium over several episodes. Today, we would like to hear more about the supernatural events that have occurred in your life while sitting here. Our viewers are also very eager to hear your words.
The Blessing of Badal Bhattacharjee
Gurudev:
Alright, I will share a couple of incidents. I was meditating here by the funeral pyres. Badal Bhattacharjee used to be here. He was a Brahmin who performed the last rites and offered food to the deceased. He used to drink quite a bit of alcohol, but for some reason, he was very fond of me. He used to call me "Shyam Babu." He'd say, "Shyam Babu, have some tea," and we would sit and talk.
Gurudev:
One day, while I was meditating, he called me from the crematorium grounds. He said, "Come here, I have something to tell you." I asked, "What is it, Father?" He said, "You are meditating here. Place your hand on my body and promise me you will never leave this crematorium. You will find Mother Kali right here. I am a Bhattacharjee, and I am blessing you with both handsāyou will soon have a vision of Mother Kali."
Gurudev:
I touched his feet to show respect. He got a bit startled and said, "Alright, but do one thing: never leave this place as long as you live." I gave him my word. A Brahmin gave his word to another. He was a Bhattacharjee, and so am I. He seemed very reassured.
The Warning: The Crematorium Guardian
Gurudev:
Then he said, "Wait, there's one more thing. There is a 'Crematorium Guardian' (Shmashan Rakshak) here, and he is terrifying. Always keep a sharp knife with you."
Gurudev:
I asked, "Why, Father? What will I do with a knife?" He replied, "You might encounter him one day. He is hideous. I've seen him, that's why I'm telling you. I'm old. I don't know how much longer I'll live, but I'm giving you this advice. Keep a sharp knife. If you ever see him in this crematoriumāand it was a very desolate place back thenācut your finger and let some blood fall on the ground. If you can't do that, death is certain. I'm telling you this."
Protocols of the Crematorium: Gatekeepers and Guardians
Gurudev:
I told him I would remember his words. He also said, "When you come to the crematorium at night, first take permission from the gatekeepers (Dwar Rakshaks) before entering." I told him it wasn't necessary for me since I'd been coming here for so long and everyone knew me. He insisted, "No, do it. Bow to the ground and then enter."
Gurudev:
That was when I first learned from him that there are guardians and protectors of the crematorium. He was nearly 80 years old then, frail and trembling, but those two or three things he told me stayed with me. He passed away laterāhe drank a lotābut I still follow his advice to the letter. I still keep a sharp blade with me. I use it to offer a drop of blood if needed. By God's grace and his blessings, I haven't encountered that entity yet. I've been scared and have run away sometimes, but I haven't seen him specifically. I always carry that protection with me. I've told my disciples the same. It's been about 35 to 40 years now, and I haven't had a direct confrontation.
Understanding the Entity
Disciple:
Are you talking about an incorporeal spirit, Gurudev?
Gurudev:
I don't know. He described a very hideous person. He said if you see him, you might faint from terror. I haven't seen him, but I still follow the rituals. I ask the gatekeepers for permission when I enter and leave.
The Nature of the Crematorium: Mysterious Presences
Disciple:
Gurudev, many people think of the crematorium as a terrifying place associated with ghosts. What is your perspective?
Gurudev:
It's not just an idea. There are certain "airs" and smells here. Sometimes you get the scent of jasmine garlands, and sometimes the smell of rotten fish or prawns. Sometimes there's a sudden blast of hot air, followed by a freezing cold wind that feels like an air conditioner. I've experienced these things many times.
Identifying Supernatural Activity
Disciple:
Regarding these smells and sensations, is there positive or negative activity?
Gurudev:
Mostly negative. You realize they are around or have arrived.
Can Spirits Cause Harm?
Disciple:
Can they harm people?
Gurudev:
Yes. I discourage people from coming here at night, especially those with long, loose hair or those who haven't protected their bodies (Deho Bondhon). I've seen people get high fevers after coming here.
The Story of Bhagirath: Physical Evidence of Spirit Attack
Gurudev:
I'll tell you one last story about a man named Bhagirath who works here. Bhagirath is a disciple of mine and stays at this temple. Every day, he goes up to offer food to the spirits. One Tuesday, while offering food, he was slappedāhardāby something invisible. He didn't tell me immediately, but he had done something wrong during the ritual. After that, his health declined rapidly. He was hospitalized for a month and couldn't eat anything.
Gurudev:
I heard about it and told them to bring him to me. He had been in the hospital for a month with no improvement. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong despite many tests and blood work. When he came to me, I told him to eat. He said, "Father, I can't eat." This was a man who usually eats a lot! I insisted, performed a cleansing ritual on him, and asked what happened. He told me, "Father, I went up there, and someone slapped me. There was no one there. It was silent and empty." Within three days of coming to me, he was completely fine.
Disciple:
So, these are the matters of ghosts and spirits?
Gurudev:
Yes. Others have experienced it too. I'll show you more people later.
The Sacred Dog: Sixteen Years of Protection
Disciple:
Tell us another story from your memories, Gurudev.
Gurudev:
Once, I was meditating, and my son brought home a stray dog from the street. I was worried someone would hit it, but my son said it was just wandering around, so he brought it in. We kept it, and it became so pampered it wouldn't sleep without the AC!
Gurudev:
One afternoon around 3:00 PM, I saw the dog tearing into a packet of biscuits it had stolen. I got angry because I was hungry too, and I didn't know where it got them. I hit it a couple of times and scolded it. The dog just looked at me and stopped eating the biscuits. As it grew, it became incredibly attached to me. If I left the house, it would follow my cycle, motorbike, or auto-rickshaw all the way to the crematorium. I'd try to lock it in a room, but it would always find a way to get here.
Gurudev:
There was a man named Gopal Da here who used to feed it. One day, during a meeting on the third floor, the dog burst in looking for me! People were shocked a dog made it to the third floor. It protected me for 15 years in this crematorium.
Shumu Versus the Mad Dog
Gurudev:
Once, a rabid dog that had bitten many people entered while I was meditating. My dog, Shumu, was sitting by my feet. It jumped up, grabbed the mad dog by the throat, shook it, and threw it aside. The mad dog died. Then Shumu just came back and sat peacefully by the funeral pyre with me until I finished my meditation. He wasn't even afraid of the fire.
The Dog's Passing and Bamdeb's Blessing
Gurudev:
The dog eventually passed away. It was very tragic. My son and his wife were struggling to have a child. They had several miscarriages. People said that because of the work I do, we wouldn't have descendants. I went to Tarapith and prayed to Bamdeb Baba. I cried and asked for a grandson.
Gurudev:
One night at 4:00 AM, my wife woke up to perform her rituals. She saw a Sadhu (holy man) enter the room and then simply vanish. She woke me up, terrified. I realized it was a sign from Bamdeb Baba. Soon after, my grandson was bornāand he was born with matted hair (jata). That is our history.
Closing: A 40-Year History
Disciple:
Thank you, Gurudev. We will hear more from your memories another day.
Gurudev:
Yes, there is a 40-year history here. Many incidents, many times I've run away in fearāthere is much to tell.
Disciple:
Which you will tell us in the coming days. Greetings, Gurudev.
Gurudev:
Greetings, son.
