Interviewer: Greetings, Guru.
Guru: Greetings.
Interviewer: Greetings, Shantanu.
Shantanu: Greetings.
Interviewer: Guru, you have shared a lot of knowledge with us through Shantanu—topics like Kaal Sarp Dosha and Manglik Dosha. You explained beautifully how many astrologers often misguide people regarding these, and you clarified their true meanings and effects.
Guru: Exactly. We are doing this because many people have been commenting, asking if we've "opened a school." The truth is, people often don't understand these matters until they fall into trouble and start running from one place to another.
Interviewer: It seems their vested interests are being affected, which is why they react that way.
Guru: Even if it affects their interests, this is being said for the benefit of everyone. It's so that people can learn and not be misguided. That is the only reason.
Interviewer: Well, today I would like to ask you about Guru Chandal Dosha and Grahana Dosha. If you could explain these in detail, it would be very helpful.
Guru: Sure, we will. Shantanu, go ahead.
Shantanu: The concept of Guru Chandal is often misunderstood due to a lack of knowledge. We consider Jupiter (Brihaspati) as the 'Guru,' but somewhere along the line, without truly understanding him, people labeled Rahu as a 'Chandal' (a derogatory term for an outcast). If we look at Rahu's birth history, our scriptures tell us that Rahu is the son of Kashyapa Muni. Just as many of us belong to the Kashyapa Gotra and are descendants of Kashyapa Muni, Rahu shares that lineage.
Shantanu: When Rahu was decapitated by the Sudarshan Chakra, he continued his journey of penance. With the blessings of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara, he was granted boons. He was given the Brahma Mantra and the sacred thread (Poita). He even consumed Amrit (the nectar of immortality), which is why he never died; he became immortal. To understand this, one must study the Puranas.
Shantanu: The Puranas tell us that Rahu's character is that of a Brahmin. Despite being born in the Asura (demon) clan, his struggle and his achievement of a place among the Navagrahas (nine planets) offer us many lessons.
Shantanu: Now, let's look at Jupiter. Jupiter is the Dev Guru (the teacher of the gods). He teaches techniques, strategies, and the path of righteousness (Dharma). Jupiter oversees various sectors like administration, law, and biology. In the theory of the five elements (Panchamahabhuta), Jupiter represents the element of Space (Akash). When we look at the sky, we see an infinite mystery; Jupiter gathers and provides that expansive knowledge. He represents wisdom and knowledge.
Shantanu: Rahu, on the other hand, governs psychology and technology. He represents time (Kaal). The scriptures say, "Shanivat Rahu, Kujavat Ketu"—meaning Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars. Rahu governs our journey from birth to death. He represents the Prana Vayu (the vital life breath). We cannot survive for a moment without the breath, which is governed by Rahu.
Shantanu: Because Rahu operates with the energy of Ketu and Mars, Jupiter actually has a certain affinity for Rahu. When Jupiter (wisdom) and Rahu (technique/time) come together, instead of calling it Guru Chandal, we should call it Guru-Shishya Yoga (the union of teacher and student). Jupiter provides the knowledge, and Rahu applies it to manage time and technique effectively. This is why the scriptures refer to it as Guru-Shishya Yoga.
Shantanu: Similarly, if we look at Venus (Shukra) and Jupiter together, Venus is also a Brahmin. When Lord Shiva gave Venus the Sanjivani Mantra (the power to revive the dead), He instructed Venus to treat everyone equally—whether Deva or Asura. Venus follows this principle. Just as a doctor shouldn't discriminate between the rich and the poor, Venus represents this impartial medical and healing sector.
Shantanu: Jupiter is a Sattvik Brahmin, while Venus is a Rajasic Brahmin. When multiple "Gurus" like Venus and Jupiter sit together in a house, we call it Adhi Guru Yoga. It is never a "Chandal" yoga; the scriptures call it Adhi Guru Yoga. Astrologers have unfortunately popularized wrong terms like "Chandal" for Rahu.
Guru: Tell them about Grahana Dosha (Eclipse defect) as well.
Shantanu: There is no such thing as Grahana Dosha in the scriptures in the way it's commonly described. To understand eclipses, we must go back to Rahu's history. During the churning of the ocean, when Rahu was decapitated, it was the Sun and the Moon who had identified him to Lord Vishnu. Out of that ancient grievance, Rahu periodically "grasps" or eclipses the Sun and the Moon.
Shantanu: This is a cyclic process related to the lunar phases—the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) and Krishna Paksha (waning phase). We see different scenarios from the 6th day of one phase to the 6th day of the next. In a birth chart, we look at the Tithis (lunar days). There is no real "defect" called Grahana Dosha. I will explain the specifics of eclipses and other "curses" in a future session.
Guru: And mention the Gana (disposition/temperament).
Shantanu: The topic of Gana is very vast. It's hard to explain quickly, so I will dedicate a separate episode to it. For now, I hope I've helped you understand that there is no Guru Chandal Dosha; there is only Guru-Shishya Yoga.
Shantanu: In astrology, we shouldn't just judge by the 12 houses or the planets alone. Every house is a good house. What matters are the Nakshatras (lunar mansions). If we calculate based on Nakshatras, we can understand the true strength or weakness of a planet—whether it is exalted, debilitated, or powerful. Nowadays, many people skip Nakshatra calculations and jump to topics like Guru Chandal or Grahana Dosha, which aren't even written in the core scriptures.
Interviewer: Guru, the way your disciple Shantanu explained this was very enlightening. I hope our viewers have learned a lot.
Guru: We will continue to discuss the entirety of astrology. If people understand, that's great; if not, there's not much we can do. But we will keep sharing the truth.
Interviewer: Indeed. You are giving people the "Sanjeevani" (life-giving knowledge). Whether they can take it or not is up to them. As the saying goes, "When the mind is clouded, one seeks poison; when the mind is clear, one seeks food."
Guru: Exactly.
Interviewer: Thank you, Guru. Thank you, Shantanu. Greetings to you both.
Guru: Greetings.
