Host: Greetings, Gurudev. Welcome to our YouTube channel, Gupta Sadhak Shama Khepa. We are currently discussing the Das Mahavidya (The Ten Cosmic Wisdom Goddesses).
Host: Today, we will discuss the eighth of the Das Mahavidya—Goddess Bagalamukhi. For our viewers, let me mention that Goddess Bagala is the one who paralyzes enemies. She controls the darker aspects of human nature, such as envy, hatred, and cruelty. She is often visualized with the head of a crane. Let's hear more about her from Gurudev.
Gurudev: Yes, as we say: Kali, Tara, Mahavidya, Shodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, and Dhumavati. Bagala is a Siddha Vidya (Perfected Wisdom). She maintains our household and societal order. All auspicious events—weddings, annaprashan (first rice ceremony), and sacred thread ceremonies—fall under her influence. For example, during weddings, we apply raw turmeric to the bride and groom; this is an auspicious substance associated with Goddess Bagalamukhi. She oversees these blessings.
Gurudev: However, if she becomes displeased, she can cause significant distress and even death. I will now recite her Dhyan Mantra (meditation chant).
Gurudev: Madhye sudhabdhi-mani-mandapa-ratna-vedi
Gurudev: Simhasana-parigatam paripita-varnam
Gurudev: Pitambara-bharana-malya-vibhushitangim
Gurudev: Devim bhajami dhruta-mudgara-vairi-jihvam...
Gurudev: Jihvagram-adaya-karena devim, vamena shatrum paripidiyantim
Gurudev: Gadabhighatena cha dakshinena, pitambaradhyam dvibhujam namami.
Gurudev: Hrim Bagalamukhi Svaha.
Gurudev: Her seed syllable is Hrim.
Gurudev: Let me recite it once more for clarity.
Gurudev: This is her Pranam Mantra (salutation):
Gurudev: Om Hrim Bagalamukhi Sarva-dushtanam Vacham Mukham Stambhaya Jihvam Kilaya Kilaya Buddhim Vinashaya Hrim Om Svaha.
Gurudev: This is also used as a Pushpanjali (flower offering) mantra.
Gurudev: If you look at her image, you will see the Goddess sitting on a man—he is none other than Lord Shiva. She has one foot placed over him. In her left hand, she pulls the tongue of a demon (Asura), and in her right hand, she holds a mace (mudgar). She strikes the tongue with the mace to break it. This symbolizes that if someone speaks ill of a Bagala devotee, the Goddess silences them.
Gurudev: Her powers include Stambhan (paralyzing), Maran (killing), Ucchatan (driving away), and Vashikaran (attraction). However, achieving perfection (Siddhi) in her worship is extremely difficult. Devotees must follow strict rules and discipline.
Gurudev: Without performing specific rituals, she is not easily satisfied. You can worship her while sitting before an image of Kali or Tara. There is also the Bagala Yantra. People often seek her help when marriages are stalled or when there is a lack of prosperity and food in the house.
Gurudev: The rule for Bagala worship is to perform all rituals, offerings, and prayers before noon (12:00 PM). After noon, her image or deity must be covered with a yellow cloth. One should not look at her in the afternoon.
Gurudev: While she can be worshiped at home, it must be done very carefully. Even a small mistake can lead to negative consequences. A few days ago, a lady came to me; she had an image of Bagala at home but had fallen very ill due to a ritualistic error. I gave her an amulet to help her recover.
Gurudev: As I mentioned, the rituals must be finished by noon. This is stated in her scriptures. In a household, after 12:00 PM, she must be covered. In public temples, it might be different, but for personal practice, we cover her image and do not view her until the next morning.
Gurudev: If she is pleased, she can grant you a life like a palace; if she is displeased, she can leave you with nothing. Her favorite color is yellow (Pitambari). This is why yellow is used in weddings and other sacred ceremonies for good omens.
Gurudev: Sometimes people mix the auspicious with the inauspicious. While turmeric and yellow are auspicious, consuming meat (chicken or mutton) during these rituals can invite inauspiciousness. However, fish is generally considered acceptable and even auspicious in some traditions, like at weddings.
Gurudev: I have seen many practitioners suffer because they did not follow the noon rule. They view the Goddess or practice rituals late in the day, which is harmful.
Gurudev: Goddess Bagalamukhi has two hands—one holding the mace and the other pulling the enemy's tongue. She is the destroyer of enemies (Shatru-Nighatkari).
Host: Gurudev, these rituals sound very intense.
Gurudev: Indeed. These are secret practices taught by a Guru. Some people use these powers for negative purposes like Maran or Ucchatan, but she truly blesses those who seek spiritual advancement. A true devotee never even have to ask; if they wish for something as simple as a specific fish for dinner, it arrives by her grace.
Gurudev: Again, home worship is risky. If the Goddess becomes angry, only a Guru can protect the devotee. If the Guru has passed away, it becomes even more dangerous. I helped that lady because she was suffering greatly from improper worship.
Gurudev: There are complex rituals involving "stolen" clay from a potter's house, creating a bull (Nandi) figure on a silver plate, and worshiping with turmeric water. It involves goats and specific metal nails. These are not meant for ordinary people; only forest-dwelling ascetics or advanced practitioners can truly perform them.
Gurudev: We also provide Bagala amulets (tabeez). They are effective for 12 years. They must be drawn at exactly midnight (12:00 AM) in a secluded room or a cremation ground while chanting her name tens of thousands of times.
Gurudev: The amulet must be made of gold. Silver or other metals will not work for this specific purpose. After 12 years, the energy of the amulet expires.
Gurudev: Her stone is Red Coral (Pola). She brings prosperity and happiness to the home. But remember, any inauspicious item or behavior in the house can turn her blessings into curses. She demands absolute purity and adherence to the rules.
Gurudev: Because she is so powerful and potentially volatile, we are very careful about recommending her worship or giving her amulets to just anyone. People must be able to maintain the discipline required.
