Interviewer: Gurudev, Pranam (Salutations).
Gurudev: Pranam, Pranam.
Interviewer: We are listening to you on our YouTube channel, "Gupta Sadhak Shyama Khyapa," regarding the relationship between the Ten Mahavidyas and the Nine Planets (Navagrahas). In our previous episode, we heard you speak about Saturn. Today, we would like to hear from you about the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter, or Brihaspati.
Gurudev: Yes. See, "Jupiter" is actually its Roman name. We call it Brihaspati, who is known as Devguru (the teacher of the gods). Just as Jagadguru Shankaracharya is the teacher of the world, Brihaspati is the teacher of the gods. The presiding deity (Ishta Devi) of Brihaspati is Maa Tara.
Gurudev: Maa Tara is the essence of this world. That is why Ramprasad Sen said, "Tara is your name, the essence of the world." This "essence" or Tara is particularly important in our Tantra Sadhana. For ordinary householders, if they can see or worship Tara—though Tara herself doesn't directly grant fruits because she is supposedly cursed—one can still gain great results by seeking her presence. If Tara is favorable to us, she sustains our life and the world. One of her seed mantras is "Hreem," which means to sustain or stabilize.
Gurudev: Brihaspati worships Maa Tara; she is his Ishta Devi. Just as Jupiter sustains the solar system, it is considered the cause of stability for the gods. In terms of size, it is the largest. It sits at the "head" of the Earth, so to speak. Whenever meteors or similar objects approach Earth, Jupiter often absorbs them. Jupiter is protecting our Earth. This is why we call it Devguru. If Jupiter is favorable to someone, they don't have much to worry about.
Gurudev: Sometimes, Jupiter can act as a "Maraka" (a planet that brings difficulties), as astrologers say. But in most cases, without Jupiter's help, your household or life will face many obstacles. If Jupiter is favorable, one doesn't need to worry.
Gurudev: As I mentioned, Jupiter absorbs all the meteors that would otherwise hit Earth. It sits at the top of the Earth to protect it. The color associated with the planet Jupiter is pink. Similarly, the color of my Mother Tara is pink. Observe the connection between the planets and the deities—their colors match. Yesterday, I mentioned that Saturn is blue and Dakshina Kali is blue. Their colors are the same. Today, the color of Brihaspati and the color of Maa Tara are the same. We describe Maa Tara as "Nila-Vishala-Pingala." This "Pingala" or pinkish-yellow color is the color of the Mother and also the color of Jupiter. The connection is identical.
Gurudev: Jupiter is the teacher of the gods and the protector of the Earth. We are part of the Earth, so this planet is always protecting us. There are many meteors floating in space, and Jupiter absorbs them, preventing most from falling onto Earth.
Gurudev: If someone worships Jupiter and Maa Tara, all their dangers and troubles are removed. If the "Guru" (Jupiter) is favorable, and Maa Tara is favorable, things go well. Each of the nine planets has a corresponding deity among the Ten Mahavidyas. Although more planets have been discovered, like Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, our ancient sages did not include them because their rays or influences do not reach Earth in the same way. The scientists have discovered them, yes, but the Nine Planets our ancestors spoke of are the ones whose rays directly fall on Earth and affect humanity. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are many light-years away, so their influence is minimal.
Gurudev: This is where the science of astrology originates. You see people wearing gemstones; each stone corresponds to a planet. For example, "Nila" (Blue Sapphire) is for Saturn, and "Pokhraj" (Yellow Sapphire) is for Jupiter. These stones and their colors are linked to the deities.
Gurudev: Jupiter is a massive planet; they say sixteen Earths could easily fit inside it. Like Saturn, Jupiter is a "Mahagraha" (Great Planet). When Saturn and Jupiter transition together, it can be very significant. While Saturn might bring sorrow or trials to make a person "pure" or "solid," Jupiter fills a person's life with abundance.
Gurudev: This is why we have so much devotion for Maa Tara—because she is the essence of the world. Tara's planet is Jupiter. I said yesterday that Dakshina Kali's planet is Saturn, and today I say Tara's planet is Jupiter.
Gurudev: There are specific donations (Daan) associated with these planets that can be very helpful. We say that "donations cut through everything." If you donate for a specific planet, it helps. For Saturn, one should fast all day and, in the evening, donate an iron plate, small bowls, sesame oil, black sesame, Mashkolai (black gram), five spotless fruits, and a blue cloth. If possible, a blue stone should also be given. This should be done in the evening after bathing. You should go to a Shani temple, give the donation through a priest in your name, and then leave without bringing anything back. You should eat some prasad given by the priest, bathe again, and go home. This is the ritual for Saturn. It is said that Saturn cannot tolerate the touch of a woman during this ritual, so it is traditionally performed by men.
Gurudev: For Jupiter, the donations include chickpeas, turmeric, yellow fruits, books, and a pink cloth. This can be donated at a Tara temple or a place where Tara is worshiped. Since Maa Tara is also associated with knowledge (Saraswati), books should be donated. Giving a pink cloth, the color of the Mother, along with chickpeas, yellow fruit, turmeric, and books, will bring good results.
Gurudev: Each deity has a corresponding planet. Yesterday was Saturn, today is Jupiter, and tomorrow will be Mercury (Budh). Maa Kamakhya is the deity for Mercury. Each has its own specific donation.
Interviewer: Is there any specific mantra?
Gurudev: The priest will recite the mantras. I don't think it's necessary for the person to recite them. It's better to just give the donation. Donations are very effective. If someone has a "bad" Jupiter or a "bad" Saturn, giving these donations will bring a lot of relief. Because we follow the Ten Mahavidyas, we respect the planets, as we had to worship each planet during our Mahavidya rituals.
Interviewer: Thank you, Gurudev. Friends, you just heard Gurudev speak about Jupiter. In the next episode, we will hear about Mercury.
Gurudev: Wait, one more thing. I forgot to mention Ghee. For Jupiter, one should also donate a small bottle of Ghee. So, for Jupiter, the list is: chickpeas, books, yellow fruits, turmeric, and Ghee. This, along with a pink cloth, should be donated at a Tara temple.
