Guru Shyama Khyapa: Now, as we have mentioned all these names, what exactly is a "Pravara"? A Pravara can be a son or a disciple of a Rishi. When they become very famous and renowned, their names are included in the "Pravara-mala."
Guru Shyama Khyapa: For example, consider our contemporary lineages: Vamdeb Baba, then his successor Nigamananda Saraswati, and then Durga Prasanna Paramhansa Dev. These are three generations. Pravara works similarly—it is based on generations of influential figures. If I give Diksha to someone and they become very famous, they become a "Pravara" associated with me.
Guru Shyama Khyapa: The Pravara-mala consists of the names of those who achieved great fame, whether they were disciples or biological descendants. This is an ancient system. The figures I mentioned were legends—some even "drank the ocean" or emerged during the churning of the ocean. These details are rare to find today. Many modern priests might just recite the names without knowing who these Rishis actually were. That is why I explained the names of the Rishis alongside the Pravara-mala.
Guru Shyama Khyapa: Also, there is a difference between a "Rishi" and a "Muni." Rishis maintain a household and have children, living within a family structure. Munis, like the great Kapil Muni, do not maintain a household. Only Rishis live within a family and produce descendants while remaining great spiritual pillars. That is how the Pravara-mala is formed—through their associates, brothers, or sons who also achieved greatness.
