One of the most practical questions a Sadhaka on this path must eventually answer is: which combination of deities should I pursue โ€” Batuka Bhairava and Maa Durga, or Mahakala Bhairava and Maa Kali? Shri Praveen Radhakrishna addresses this with unusual directness, mapping each combination to a specific stage of the Jiva's evolutionary journey โ€” and warning that leaping to the higher forms before one is ready brings a particular kind of pain.

Why Batuka Bhairava with Maa Durga

Batuka Bhairava is the young form of Bhairava โ€” the deity before penance, before Vairagya (detachment) has set in. He represents the full vitality of the Bhairava energy still engaged with the world: pursuit, ambition, momentum, and the restless Guru Tattva within Shiva at its most unbounded. He is the perfect Ishta for the Sadhaka who is still in the active phase of worldly life.

Maa Durga is the most magnificently adorned form of the Divine Feminine โ€” dressed in the finest saree, jewelled, glorious, the highest expression of Bhavani in her regal form. In this combination, she serves as the mother energy that contains and balances the powerful Bhairava force. Just as a young man with an exceptionally close relationship with his mother develops extraordinary confidence and resilience, the mother energy of Durga grounds and channels Batuka's raw Shakti into productive outcomes.

There is no contradiction between material ambition and Sadhana at this stage. Maa Durga governs grandeur, power, and abundance โ€” note that kings and politicians throughout history have worshipped her for precisely this reason. The combination allows full-throttle material pursuit without compromising one's spiritual foundation.

How the Transition Happens Naturally

A key misunderstanding Shri Praveen addresses is the fear that choosing Batuka and Durga will foreclose the path to Moksha (liberation). This concern is unnecessary.

Batuka Bhairava is not a separate deity from Kala Bhairava โ€” he is the same deity before the Tapasya. The transition from Batuka to Kala Bhairava is baked into the Sadhana itself. As the Sadhaka matures, as life provides experiences of both fulfilment and loss, the Tapasya phase inevitably arrives. The restless young energy settles. The world, once so irresistible, begins to feel limited. The Jiva turns inward. External travel gives way to internal exploration. This is not a decision โ€” it is a natural unfolding.

The same principle applies to Maa Durga. Within her glorious, decorated form lives Maa Kali โ€” latent, waiting. The Raktabija story makes this explicit.

The Kali Within Durga: The Raktabija Story

Describing the Vigraha installed at his home, Shri Praveen points to the iconographic detail that reveals everything. Maa Durga, when she entered battle against Raktabija โ€” the demon whose every drop of blood that touched the ground instantly created a new clone of himself โ€” found that her conventional weapons only multiplied the enemy. Every wound she inflicted spawned dozens of new demons.

At that precise moment of deadlock, she brought out the Kali within herself. Kali is present in all deities. Every time a deity enters battle; every time an Ugra (fierce) form arises โ€” the Shakti present is Kali. Maa Durga's Kali form appeared, cup in hand to catch every drop of Raktabija's blood before it touched the ground, tongue extended, unstoppable.

This form of Maa Kali โ€” the one who emerges from within Durga in the moment of ultimate battle โ€” is where the Sadhaka eventually arrives. Batuka + Durga leads here. It is not a detour; it is the path itself.

What Happens If You Jump Directly to Mahakala and Maa Kali

Shri Praveen is candid about this from personal experience. A young Sadhaka, still in the active phase of worldly desires โ€” career, relationships, travel, recognition โ€” who approaches Mahakala Bhairava and Maa Kali directly will receive everything they ask for. But the manner in which it is given is not gentle.

Using a vivid image: it is like lying down on a funeral pyre burning, while also trying to sip a coffee. Both things are happening simultaneously and incompatibly. Maa Kali's method is total destruction of all attachment, followed by restoration โ€” but the restored world returns to a Sadhaka who is no longer attached to it. If the Sadhaka panics at the destruction phase and tries to hold on, the experience is agonizing.

They will return. But the Sadhaka who meets these forms prematurely, still clutching material goals, will suffer intensely through the in-between phase. Those who have fully lived their material life and are now genuinely ready for Vairagya will find the same forms liberating rather than devastating.

The easier, recommended path is: Batuka โ†’ Kala Bhairava, and Durga โ†’ Kali. Let the transition happen in its own time.

Never Surrender Your Sorrows to Another Human Being

Shri Praveen closes with what he calls a critical understanding โ€” one that applies regardless of which combination a Sadhaka follows.

Every time you complain to a human being, you weaken your Sadhana.

This is stated without qualification. When a Sadhaka in distress reaches out to a friend, a family member, or any other person for comfort, they are placing that person above or equal to their Ishta in the hierarchy of trust. The deity reads this. The window closes.

The correct approach is the opposite: fight with your deity. Cry in front of them. Tell them precisely what is wrong, exactly how much it hurts, and demand their help. This is not irreverence โ€” the deity is within you, not a distant external entity bound by formal protocol. There are no rules for how to approach them in private. The relationship Shri Praveen describes is that of a Sadhaka who maintains composure in public but, in private, breaks completely and speaks to Maa or Bhairava Baba as the only true confidant.

The result: a Sadhaka who never looks for human acknowledgement, who never bows before another person's judgment, who carries their sorrows only to the divine โ€” this is someone whose Sadhana grows with every crisis instead of collapsing under it.

The word depression loses its foothold entirely, because every crisis becomes a private conversation with the divine that gets resolved.

Trust that the same deities will, in time, reveal their deepest forms โ€” Kala Bhairava and Maa Kali โ€” from within themselves. When that day arrives, welcome it. Until then, pursue your life with full commitment, knowing the mother energy of Durga and the vitality of Batuka have you. And whatever comes โ€” triumph or crisis โ€” carry it only to your deity.
