Guru Shyama Khyapa: His original name was Ahimsaka. He lived during the time of the Buddha. His birthplace was Shravasti. At one point, he took initiation from a wicked teacher who pushed him toward violence. He was told to commit acts of violence as practice. He became so extreme that he would go from village to village, cutting off people's fingers. He would string these fingers together and wear them as a necklace. That is why he was called Angulimala—Anguli meaning finger, Mala meaning necklace.
Guru Shyama Khyapa: He had collected 999 fingers and needed just one more to reach a thousand. One day, Buddha was traveling along a path. Seeing Buddha, Angulimala rushed down and demanded, "Give me a finger! Then my thousand will be complete." Buddha replied, "You may take it." But Buddha possessed a divine radiance. Angulimala was caught in that glow and became stunned. He said, "I do not want your finger anymore," and fell at Buddha's feet, begging for initiation.
Guru Shyama Khyapa: After initiation, Buddha told him, "From today, you shall be dedicated to human welfare." His mind underwent a massive transformation. After 15-20 years of meditation and following Buddha's path, he returned to that same village. Upon seeing him, the villagers began throwing stones and bricks. His body was wounded and bleeding, but he did not say a word. He understood: "I oppressed people, and they have returned that oppression to me."
Guru Shyama Khyapa: He went to the houses of those whose fingers he had cut. Slowly, the people he had harmed began coming to him. Those whose fingers he had cut ended up taking spiritual initiation from him. This is the power of Guru's grace and genuine transformation through sincere practice.
Guru Shyama Khyapa: Without a true Guru, if one finds a wicked teacher, the result is darkness and confusion. But through the Guru's grace, even the most wicked can be brought from violence to peace. Whatever actions you perform, you must learn from them. Transformation happens when a person realizes their wrongdoings and seeks redemption.
